Rise and Fall of the media empires (or, the great democratization of art)

Filed under: business, music, noted, photography, reviews, video, web — Eric Jeschke @ 10:30 pm

I’ll give a shot at embedding a video that I ran across in my wanderings online. It’s a feature film–one hour and 21 minutes, to be precise–that is a highly enjoyable exploration of the new digital realm that we find ourselves in. It broaches the interesting questions that arise when all the old media edifices are tumbling down because of the technological advances of our time. When everyone can make a film, a record, or “fine art” photography for a few hundreds of dollars at most and distribute it online, what is the outcome? A great democratization of media or a drowning in a deluge of mediocre works?

Personally I think it is somewhere in between. I tend to fall on the side that says this is a great thing, because I love being creative and seeing these barriers to entry fall away. And lord knows that even before the internet arrived to everyman, the media companies were already starting to crumble under their own ineptitude, avarice and greed. I’m not sorry to see most of them go and get replaced by something hopefully with a more even playing field. But I also worry about a society that has only a few regional newspapers–a bulwark of democracy, and where (like my town) the only bookstores left are used bookstores.

Interesting times we are in, and only with hindsight will it become clearer.

Two (becomes Four)

Family, Circa 2009

I was listening to alt country on Slacker the other night, and a song came on that struck a chord with me, so to speak. I looked over at the “now playing” info and made a new acquaintance: Ryan Adams. (No, not Bryan,.. Ryan. Look him up.) The song was Two. I’m not sure which version, but I found this version that I liked later on YouTube (warning: prefaced by loud DJ intro).

Well the dang song stuck in my head and wouldn’t leave. And you know what I have to do when that happens, right? Yeah, I had to learn it and then record it. Don’t ask me why I do this, it’s just a compulsion. Perhaps it had something to do with my wife and kids being out of town for the week, and feeling a little lonely. Anyway, Dear Reader, if you feel so inclined to give 2:38 of your precious time to hear my version you can catch it right here on posterous. Thanks for listening!

Turn of the Year

Self Portrait #2, Kalapana

A few reflections on the past year, and a look ahead into 2011, of a personal note, part of my ongoing journal of my creative journey.

When I look back at what I wrote last year, some things definitely have not changed. I still don’t have enough time for photography.  I still have not organized my collection or my shooting habits around projects or themes (although I am making a little progress in that direction, and certainly thinking about it a lot).

On the other hand, some things definitely have changed.  I am now fully switched over to the m4/3s system and rarely pick up the small cameras any more.  A shame, because I tend to carry those more often.  I do try to pick up a camera every time I go out the door, even if I’m just heading to a day at work. I plan to carry on that practice.

The year started out pretty well: three contests/shows entered, accepted into two.  Made a book, made another folio, had it reviewed, got some large pieces printed and framed.  But then a virtual tsunami hit me in the form of work around September.  The culmination of 5 years of work on a project coming to fruition.  And photography slid into the background.  I’m only beginning to recover, having survived the tide.  I don’t forsee that kind of work intensity being required in the next couple of years, so hopefully I can get back to a more reasonable balance of life.

As far as the photography side, in the next year I really want/need to start organizing my work around themes and projects.  I just need and want that direction.  I won’t be so focused on doing contests, but I will enter a couple select ones where it makes sense.  I’m probably through with SoFoBoMo books, although I do plan to keep on making books on my own schedule.  If I can get my work organized, I really want to push into the making of more folios.  And I think the next logical step after that is to try to arrange a solo show or get into a small group show somewhere (or at least get that process started).  Oh, and it would be fun to take in a workshop, if I can find/spare the time.  I don’t plan any major equipment upgrades, although I have a feeling my photo printer may be heading south (metaphorically speaking), so I may be looking at updating my photo printing setup sometime during the year.  I still want to dabble a bit into video, and would like to edit a couple short video pieces.

Summary: shoot more, with purpose, results ending up in folios and hopefully a solo show somewhere.  I’ll keep you updated.

New for this year: On music.

Music is my other important artistic hobby.  So far I’ve been dabbling, although this last year I managed to put out something like 5 or 6 self-recorded pieces.  I listen to them from time to time.  Sometimes I cringe and sometimes I smile. For music, which is a much newer hobby to me than photography, my goals are more simple.  More practice, more recording, more playing with other people, and hopefully some public gigs down the road somewhere.  It’s not my intention to be a “musician”, but doing almost anything publicly makes you better at it, at least that’s what I’ve found with most things in life like photography, writing, speaking, etc.  Currently I play guitar and ukulele.  I’d like to get a start on learning keyboard.  Both my kids can play piano and I’m amazed by their progress, so maybe they can help me out as well as inspire me.  I’d like to record some more music with them.

Dear Reader, if you’ve made it this far, let me wish you a Happy New Year, and my best wishes for you in 2011.  I hope that you make progress on your creative goals in 2011!

No Surrender

Filed under: inspiration, life, music, songs — Tags: , , — Eric Jeschke @ 11:15 pm

Something different today folks. While I’m waiting for my Blurb book to arrive, I spent my Sunday afternoon with my other hobby, music. I think this all started from a Bruce Springsteen song I saw posted somewhere, maybe from Andreas’ blog. Once I’m down the rathole into YouTube music videos I can be in there quite a while before surfacing for air. I was watching Bruce videos when I ran across this absolutely stunning acoustic version of No Surrender. This got me a little excited because I was learning this song and had been playing it on the guitar in the position he normally plays it in concert, key of F all the way down the neck. In this video you can see he plays it capo 3, which means you can play it in the same key, but with much easier chords. Of course this is basic knowledge, nothing special, but it also sounded really good there and I was excited to try it myself. Then I ran across this other great version by Eddie Vedder.  Now I was totally hooked and the afternoon was lost to recording fun.  I didn’t really want to mow the yard anyway. :-)

Now that you’ve heard these two completely awesome musicians and their versions, you can steel yourself and sample my humble attempt.  Before you do, I’d just like to refer your attention to the large graphic in this post.  This is a super-scientific graph that shows the amount of relative music experience of the three persons mentioned in this post.  Of course, my section would be even smaller if the graphic making software allowed it!

So without further ado, please check it out on my posterous: No Surrender, Eric Jeschke version.

Tying the Knot

Another music post.

This is the last of four songs we played and sang at Lauren and Tyler’s wedding in Feb.  Of course this is a studio version and not the version we played at the beach.  I’m learning a whole lot about recording along the way here.

Again, hop over to my ponderous and click the play button.

The Ballad of Lauren and Tyler

Filed under: life, music, songs — Tags: , , — Eric Jeschke @ 1:14 am

Untitled

I performed this song with my friend Doug at his son Tyler’s wedding at Punalu’u black sand beach last month here on the Big Island.  The tune is roughly to the song “Walk on the Water”, by Toad the Wet Sprocket.  I haven’t quite figured out how to do song uploads on wordpress.com, so you’ll have to pop on over to my posterous page to check out the audio.  BTW, I highly recommend stereo headphones for this one.

I’ve been doing a fair bit of music/recording lately, and I’ll be posting some of that here on this blog.  I consider this blog my outlet for creative output of a variety of sorts.  For my longtime photography readers, I will begin categorizing the posts with either “music” or “photography” as much as possible, so you can tune out the posts on music stuff if you are not interested in that (via RSS).  I’ll be explaining a little more about that in a separate post.  Of course if you are interested in the whole bit, you don’t need to change your feed at all.

Hope you enjoy it!  Feedback most welcome.
