SoFoBoMo 2009: book process

Filed under: POD, process — Tags: — Eric Jeschke @ 9:44 pm

Last year I did a POD book for my SoFoBoMo book by uploading my PDF to VioVio.  That experience was not super positive, although I ended up liking the book a fair bit anyway.

I heard really good things about Blurb, so this year I’m going to try them, with their full bleed page template and creating TIFFs or JPEGs from each PDF page.  I was pretty happy with Scribus last year for laying out the book, and I’ll probably tweak my design a little, changing font and text and content, but otherwise keeping the basic 8.5×8.5 in. format.

SoFoBoMo #2: closing in fast

Filed under: inspiration, process — Tags: — Eric Jeschke @ 9:33 pm

I’ve been busy with work and family life lately and haven’t had much time to devote to my photography.  That doesn’t mean I’m not thinking about it, but I just haven’t been able to put together a decent period of concentrated thought on the subject.  And that’s too bad, because SoFoBoMo #2 is almost here.

Last year, my parameters were:

  • new camera
  • square format
  • B&W
  • environmental portraits

This year, I want to mix it up a little.  I’d like to do more portraits, but unless something changes significantly, I don’t think I’ll have the time to visit all the subjects that I want to, unless I do something like street photography.  The same thing happened last year, so I ended up with my family as the subjects.  That worked out all right, but I don’t want a repeat.

So…with that in mind, here’s where I’m at so far for this year’s parameters:

  • current camera
  • square format (again)
  • color or B&W (not decided yet, but it will be strictly one or the other)
  • still life

That’s my stake in the ground, and now I have to let those constraints help me out.  I may also restrict the focal length as well, just to see how that steers me.  Macro is a strong possibility.  Maybe also abstracts.

Thinking 4/3rds

When the Olympus e-420 recently dropped to $500 with the pancake 25mm f2.8, I was sorely tempted. Sorely tempted.

In fact, I’m still thinking about it, even though I’ve pretty much talked myself out of it for now. Reason? Even though it is the smallest DSLR out there (I am definitely a compact camera type of guy), I am looking for a different kind of large sensor compact camera. Something more rangefinder-like. Maybe the Sigma DP2, maybe something micro 4/3rds, maybe the Samsung NX.

I just gotta exercise some more patience. There are interesting new cameras on the horizon.

I was thinking that a new camera might be just the ticket going into SoFoBoMo; it certainly added to the experience last year shooting with a new camera. But there is also something to be said for going with old trusty this year and staying Zen.

This is another one of those photographs where my conscious mind does not see anything special about it, but I keep returning to it again and again in the edit pile.

Even when I was taking the picture, I remember just seeing something and raising the camera to my eye, composing oh so briefly and firing the shutter. I remember thinking to myself, “why did I take that?”

So here it is.

If I had to say something I like about it, it would be the snow lining the one side of the trees, with the other sides bare, and the little pool of snow around the bases. There was almost no snow anywhere else, since it melted so fast. And the trees receding into the distance with that pattern… Ahh,.. dunno. I just like it.

Careful, it’s extremely virulent among males 5-10 years old…
